Hundreds of organizations request that their suppliers, portfolios and other stakeholders report their environmental data by responding through CDP every year. To ensure these requests reach the right organization and that we build the most accurate and comprehensive database of environmental information, you can search from a database of over 500 million companies.
Every company in the CDP database will now be identified with a unique Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number, provided by Dun & Bradstreet. Cities, states and regions, and some other organizations are not assigned DUNS numbers.
A DUNS number, or Data Universal Numbering System number, is a unique nine-digit identifier assigned to businesses by Dun & Bradstreet, a global data provider. It serves as a universal method of identifying businesses and is widely used in the business world for various purposes, including credit reporting, tracking financial transactions, and facilitating business-to-business transactions.
DUNS numbers are often required for companies seeking to do business with government agencies, applying for grants or contracts, or participating in certain industry-specific programs. They provide a standardized way to uniquely identify and track entities across different systems and databases.
CDP is adopting DUNS numbers as a unique identifier for companies in our database. Having a unique identifier, such as a DUNS number, ensures data integrity, reduces the risk of duplicate entries or discrepancies, and allows for more efficient processes for companies requesting disclosure or responding through CDP.
Dun & Bradstreet's DUNS number system offers a widely recognized method for identifying entities globally with a database of over 500 million companies, including private companies. We have chosen to use DUNS numbers following a comprehensive review. Companies of all sizes can register for a DUNS number from anywhere in the world, making DUNS best suited to meet the needs of the exponential increase in companies using the CDP Portal.
All companies in the CDP database will be identified by a DUNS number. Introducing a unique identifier to our CDP database facilitates efficient, scalable data management. The Dun & Bradstreet database contains over 500 million companies. Most of the organizations disclosing through CDP already have a DUNS number. For organizations where a DUNS number cannot be found, the requester will be able to raise a case through the CDP Portal to have one assigned.
